The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 kicks off this evening with hosts Algeria facing Libya in a Group A match in Algiers.

The competition which will bring together 18 teams will be played in four cities from January 13th to February 4th, 2023.

Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda will represent the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) at the competition strictly for players featuring in the domestic Leagues in their countries.

CECAFA’s three representatives will all be all out to perform better than they did in their previous appearances.

The Uganda Cranes team which has featured in the last five editions (2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020) have unfortunately not made it out of the group stage before. But head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has made it clear that the major target this time round is to qualify for the knock out stage.

The Falcons of Jediane have been the best performers in the CECAFA Zone in the CHAN tournament finishing third the two times they have featured in 2011 and 2018. The Sudan coach Burhan Tia says after finishing third in the two appearances, they must aim higher this time.

The Amavubi of Rwanda are the other team in the Zone who have performed fairly well reaching the quarter final stage in 2016 and 2020, but bowed out at the group stage in 2011 and 2018.

The other teams in the CECAFA Zone that have featured in the CHAN tournament include Burundi who stopped at the group stage in 2014, Ethiopia who also failed to make it out of the group in 2014 and 2016, and Tanzania who bowed out in the group stage in the inaugural competition in 2009 and 2020.
