South Sudan stops 10-man Kenya to finish third in CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup
South Sudan have finished in third position at the ongoing CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup in the Ethiopian town of Bahir Dar.
The determined South Sudan team defeated a 10-man Kenya Emerging Stars team 1-0 in a playoff match played this afternoon.
After putting Kenya under a lot of pressure for most of the match Dani Lual Gumanok netted the lone goal for the South Sudan team. Kenya had Frank Odhiambo sent off at the stroke of full time.
It was also a revenge for the South Sudan team that lost to the same Kenyan team 2-0 in the group stages. “We created some scoring chances, but failed to take them. But am glad the young players have got some good exposure in this tournament,” said kenya’s head coach Stanley Khayo Okumbi.
The South Sudan coach Simon James Yor was full of praise for his players. “The players represented the country well because they played their hearts out to finish in third position,” added Yor.
Tomorrow the two unbeaten sides in the tournament Burundi and Tanzania will face off in the final.
