The regional CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup to take place in Ethiopia has been postponed.

Auka Gacheo, the CECAFA Executive Director said today that the competition will now start on July 17th, 2021.

The event, the first on the 2021 CECAFA calendar was originally set to start July 3rd in the town of Bahir Dar.
Gacheo said the change was made today during a zoom meeting today between CECAFA together with seven general secretaries of Member Associations.

In the press release issued today, Gacheo said the change was effected because some Member Associations have gone into lockdown due to COVID-19 and are struggling to get government approval to travel to the event.

He said the change was also necessitated by the fact that the South Sudan team technical bench and some of their players are currently quarantined in Doha, Qatar after attending the FIFA Arab Cup and are due to travel back on the 7th of July, while the League in Tanzania is also still ongoing and will end on July 18th after which some of their key players will only be available to travel.

Apart from Sudan and Somalia, all the other member associations have confirmed participation. The DR Congo U-23 team will also participate as guests.
