CECAFA U-20 CHALLENGE CUP: Sudan humble Djibouti 4-0 in opening game

Sudan have gone top of Group A with a 4-0 win over Djibouti as the 2019 Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup kicked off at the Pece War Memorial Stadium in Gulu on Saturday. Abbas Mohamed gave the Sudan team the lead after 24 minutes as they dominated play.

The Djibouti team resorted to a defensive approach to deny Sudan chance of getting more goals.

But after recess Ali Albager Eljamri made it 2-0 for Sudan after 74 minutes. Yaser Ammar Aboalqassem increased Sudan’s lead in the 78th minute.

In the 86th minute Musab Kurdman Elsiddiq converted a penalty for the Sudan team. Sudan now lead Group A before Uganda face Eritrea in the second game at the same Stadium.

“We are happy to start the tournament with a big win. We shall keep working hard as the tournament progresses,’ said Sudan’s coach Mohamed Mousa.

Djibouti’s coach Jonas Komla said it was a poor start by his team. “We need to improve in the next game,” added the Mali born coach.

In Group B South Sudan was meant to battle Burundi in another match at the Fufa Technical Centre Stadium in Njeru.

The tournament sponsored by the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) that has attracted 11 teams started on Saturday and ends on October 5th.

Last month Eritrea hosted the Cecafa U-15 Challenge Cup which was won by Uganda when they humbled Kenya 4-0 in the final.
