CECAFA U-20 CHALLENGE CUP: South Sudan’s head coach Yor happy to break jinx

South Sudan’s head coach Simon James Yor has said he is happy to see his team qualify for the quarter finals at the on-going Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup in Uganda. It is the first time a team from South Sudan makes it to the knock out stage in a football tournament since the country was admitted by Cecafa, CAF and FIFA.

“We are very happy that we are the first South Sudan team to get to a quarter final level in a tournament,” said the coach after his team humbled Somalia 3-0 in their last Group C match played on Wednesday at the Fufa Technical Center in Njeru.

Against Somalia skipper Daniel Samuel Solong, Dhata Joseph Stephen and Makueth Wol Akeen who plays in the Uganda Premier League scored for South Sudan.

The coach said that he is very excited that besides breaking the jinx the players are getting good international exposure. “We more of these international matches our players get better,” he added.

South Sudan started with a 3-3 draw against Burundi before stopping Somalia on Wednesday. They are pitted against their brothers from Sudan at the quarter final stage. Sudan finished second behind Eritrea in Group A.

All the quarter final matches will be played on September 29th before the semis finals on October 2nd. The play-off and finals will take place October 5th.
