CECAFA SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP: My players need to get sharp at goal – Mgunda
Tanzania’s head coach Juma Mgunda has said he is not happy with the low scoring rate of his team at the on-going CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup. After losing 1-0 to Kenya in the opening Group B match, the Tanzanian team picked their first win 1-0 against Zanzibar heroes on Tuesday at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo in the Ugandan capital Kampala.
Ditram Nchimbi netted the lone goal after 38 minutes. Zanzibar’s goalkeeper Suleiman Ahmed Ali parried a shot back into Nchimbi path and he made no mistake slotting the ball in the next.
But Mgunda has made it clear that his team is playing well but not scoring. “Football is about goals and if you don’t get the goals then it becomes a problem. We need to get sharper at goal as the tournament progresses,” added the coach.
The coach also noted that the level of the competition has gotten better as several teams have improved. “No team is a push over in this tournament and this therefore calls for hard work. Our target is to win this trophy,” added the coach.
Kenya who have already picked two wins in Group B have already qualified for the semi final, while Tanzania are second on 3 points before they face Sudan in their last Group game on Saturday.
The regional tournament will enter the semi final stage on December 17th before the play-off for third place and final to be played on December 19th.
Meanwhile, Tanzanian businessman, Mohammed Dewji, the chief executive officer of Tanzania’s biggest home-grown company – Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (MeTL) Group has promised the Tanzanian team 100 million Tanzanian shillings (US$43,562) even if they don’t win the trophy.
Dewji who was a keynote speaker at the Monitor Thought Leadership Forum at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Tuesday met the Tanzania team and asked them to work hard for the country.
