All members of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) have agreed to pay US$20,000 each to enter their teams in the 2021 Senior Challenge Cup.

Auka Gacheo, the CECAFA Executive Director told URN that the decision was made during their meeting held at the Sofitel Hotel in Rabat, Morocco on March 11th. The CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup will this time take place in Ethiopia.

“Members decided that because we need money for the logistical aspects to run the tournament, US$20,000 will be paid by each Member Association,” added Gacheo.

He said the CECAFA secretariat will give the deadline for the payment of the money and work with Member Associations to ensure this is realized. During the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Member Associations also paid US$20,000 to enter their teams.

The meeting decided that the tournaments for the senior category will be staged between June and August when the different national league are on a break and for the age group categories when schools are on holiday.

This year’s Challenge Cup will feature players who are under U-23. “The members decided that the Challenge Cup is players play U-23s along the Olympics model,” added Gacheo.

Uganda will host the CECAFA U-20 Women’s Challenge Cup, while Djibouti for the first time hosts the CECAFA Senior Women’s Challenge Cup. Tanzania will host the CECAFA Kagame Club Championship, while Kenya will stage the CAF Women’s Champions League Zonal qualifier.
