The Democratic Republic of Congo’s team will participate in the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.

Auka Gacheo, the CECAFA Executive Director confirmed the development today. “DR Congo have requested to play and we have allowed them to play as a guest side,” said Gacheo.

Ethiopia will host the first tournament in 2021 in the CECAFA calendar between July 3-18th in the town of Bahir Dar.

Gacheo told Cecafaonline that having the DR Congo team will spice the competition. “We are moving on well and Ethiopia are putting everything in place so that they host a successful tournament,” added the Executive Director.

He also asked the Member Associations to pay up the US$20,000 which they are meant to send before being drawn for the competition.

Ahead of a CAF General Assembly in Morocco this year, CECAFA members agreed that the Challenge Cup is played by U-23 age category and all Member Associations to contribute US$20,000 which will help the hosts meet some of the costs.

Besides DR Congo, the other teams that have already confirmed participation include; Uganda, Eritrea, Djibouti, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia and hosts Ethiopia.
