CECAFA boss Karia praises Tanzania President for sponsoring Women’s Champions League

The President of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has praised the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan for coming up to support women’s football in the region.

Wallace Karia said that for Samia Suluhu Hassan to inject US$100,000 towards the on-going CECAFA Women’s Champions League this year is a big message.

“We thank Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan for coming up to sponsor Women’s football in the region. We are going to make sure we uplift the standards of women football in the region,” added Karia.

He said going forward the Tanzania President will support the regional Women’s tournament which will be named the Samia Suluhu CECAFA Women’s Championship.

Karia explained that the US$100,000 offered by the Tanzania President few days ago will be used as cash prize for the best teams and individual winners, as well as to purchase various prizes and cater for other expenses related to the prize.

Besides qualifying for the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League final, the winners will bag US$30,000, while the second placed takes US$20,000 and the third placed US$10,000. There will be also be prizes for the best players, referees and coaches.

Karia said he will ask his fellow Football Presidents in the region to try and canvas for support from the President’s in their respective countries. CECAFA consists of 12 members.

Rwanda President Paul Kagame has been financially supporting the CECAFA Club Championship for men since 2002.
