Captain fantastic Loza leading goal scorer in CECAFA Women’s Champions League
A record 75 goals have been scored after the group stage at the on-going CECAFA zonal qualifiers for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League in Nairobi, Kenya.
But Geinore Abera Loza, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC skipper lads the charts with 12 goals scored.
The former Malta based professional scored one goal in their 4-1 win against Vihiga Queens FC (Kenya) in their opening Group B match, before she scored five goals in the 10-1 victory against Zanzibar’s New Generations FC.
Loza who some have named captain fantastic raised her game and bagged two hat-tricks in the 10-0 win against Yei Joints Stars of South Sudan in the last group match on Saturday. She has also recorded 5 assists to guide her team into the semi final stage where they will face Uganda’s Lady Doves FC on Monday at the Nyayo Stadium.
Loza, also voted Ethiopian woman footballer of the Year told Cecafaonline that she is hungry to lead her team to qualify for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League final. “I will keep scoring to see that the goals help my team qualify for the final tournament,” says Loza.
Another Commercial Bank of Ethiopia forward Medina Awol Busser is second on the scorer’s chart with eight goals. Besides her goals, Busser proved been a pain to defenders with her terrific skills, good movement and awareness.
The other players who have so far netted five goals each include; Favine Mawete Musolo (Simba Queens/Tanzania) and three players from Vihiga Queens (Kenya) Maurine Achieng, Tereza Obuntu Engesha and Jentrix Skikangwa Milimu.
“It is very good to see the women scoring as many goals after the group stage. We happy that the tournament has been very competitive in the group stage and we expect more interesting matches at the knock out stage,” said the CECAFA Director of Competitions, Yusuf Mossi.
With the semi finals coming up on Monday and eventually the play-off and final on September 9th, more goals will be scored.
