CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers: JKT Queens, Vihiga qualify for semis

Tanzania’s JKT Queens and Vihiga Queens (Kenya) are the first teams to qualify for the semi final stage at the on-going CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers – CECAFA Zone 2023.

JKT Queens sealed their place in the knock stage after recording a 1-0 win against New Generations FC (Zanzibar) in the first Group B match played at the Omondi Stadium on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, the Tanzania Women’s Premier League champions came all out and found the net after 56 minutes through Ester Mabanza. They continued to create several scoring opportunities, but failed to convert them.

Esther Fredy Chaburuma, the JKT Queens coach said she was happy with her team for recording a second straight aright win and making it to the semi finals. « They have remained focused and now we go back to the drawing board to plan for our last group match against Vihiga Queens, » added the coach.

In the second match 2021 champions of the Zonal qualifiers Vihiga Queens picked a 1-0 win to also book a place in the knock out stage. Bertha Omita netted the lone goal after 36 minutes.

Vihiga Queens who stopped New generations (Zanzibar) 3-1 in the opening match are now top of the log ahead of JKT Queens because of a better goal difference. The two teams Vihiha Queens and JKT Queens will face-off on August 19th in the match that will decide who tops the group.

Action returns in Group A on Friday with Fad Fc (Djibouti) facing South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars in the first match, while Uganda’s Kampala Queens face an acid test against table leaders Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in the second match at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.
