Burundi’s Ndikuriyo supports proposal to have AFCON every 4-years
The President of the Burundi Football Federation (BFF), Reverien Ndikuriyo has supported the proposal of having the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) take place every after four years. Africa’s biggest tournament now takes place every after 2 years.
During a seminar focusing on the development of football competitions and infrastructure in Africa two weeks ago in Morocco, FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposed that AFCON should be played every four years instead of the current system of two years.
Now Ndikuriyo who is also the President of the Senate in the Burundi government says he is in support of the idea as it will make Africa’s biggest tournament better and with higher profile.
“AFCON has become like a simple competition and some adjustments need to be made hoping that CAF also attract more money into the tournament,” said Ndikuriyo.
The BFF President made it clear that there is still a lot of money needed in African Football. He said having the AFCON played every after four years could raise the profile if a lot of things are done correctly interms of branding and the marketing aspect.
“We need to raise the profile of this tournament because the way it is today it lacks something,” he added.
The AFCON tournament was expanded from 16 to 24 teams starting with the 2019 edition that took place in Egypt. Sudan are the only nation in the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region to win the AFCON trophy. They beat Ghana 1-0 in the 1970 final.
