Burundi, Uganda through to Round 3 of FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
The national teams of Burundi and Uganda have qualified for the third round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 qualifiers.
Burundi edged Namibia 2-0 in the return leg played in Johannesburg, South Africa on Friday to qualify on a 5-0 goal aggregate.
Divine Nihorimbere scored the two goals that ensured Burundi book a place in the next round where they will face the winner between Eritrea and Tanzania.
Uganda also ejected Kenya 10-3 on aggregate. After winning 7-2 in Nairobi two weeks ago, the Uganda team made sure they picked a 3-1 home win against Kenya on Friday in a game played at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende.
Margaret Kunihira, Hadijah Nandago and Juliet Nalukenge scored for the home side, Peris Oside converted a penalty for the Kenyan team.
Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi, the Uganda U-20 Women’s Coach said he was happy that his team had won both home and away matches. “We still need to keep working hard because the qualifiers are still a long way to go,” added Kiyingi.
Uganda will now face South Africa in the third round. The South African team ejected Mozambique 4-3 on aggregate.
On Saturday two teams from the CECAFA region Tanzania and Eritrea will face-off in Dar es salaam. Tanzania have an advantage having won 3-0 in Asmara during the first leg.
After the third round eight teams will qualify for the fourth round before they eventually make it to the last round where the best two teams will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be hosted by Costa Rica.
