Burundi to face giants Nigeria in WAFCON 2022

Finally the draw for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022 has been conducted

In the draw conducted last night in Rabat, Morocco, Burundi has been placed in Group C alongside 11 time champions Nigeria, South Africa and Botswana.

The tournament to feature 12 teams is slated for July 2-23rd in Morocco.

“This is a very tough group, but we shall prepare well for the tournament,” says Burundi’s head coach Gustave Niyonkuru.

CECAFA’s second representatives Uganda were placed in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Burkina Faso and Senegal. George Lutalo, the head coach of the Uganda Crested Cranes made it clear that his team will prepare to face every game like a final.

Uganda will play their opening match against Senegal on July 3rd, while Burundi will take to the field the next day against Botswana.

Group B has Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia and Togo.

While Burundi will be making their first appearance in the tournament, Uganda will be returning for the first time in 22 years.

The semi finalists will qualify to the FIFA World Cup 2023 to take place in New Zealand and Australia. The 5th and 6th ranked teams in Morocco will play in an inter-continental qualifier later in the year. 

Group A: Morocco, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Uganda

Groyp B: Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, Togo

Group C: Nigeria, South Africa, Burundi, Botswana
