Burundi defeat Djibouti to qualify for WAFCON 2022
Burundi have qualified for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022 after ejecting Djibouti.
The Burundi team stopped a 10-man Djibouti team 5-0 in the return leg played this evening at Urukundo Stadium in Ngozi.
Burundi who won the first leg 6-1 qualified for the final event on a 11-1 goal aggregate. The Burundi team joins Uganda from the CECAFA Zone for the event to take place in Morocco.
Anniella Uwimana netted a ha-trick, while Rukiya Bizimana scored a brace. The Djibouti team had substitute Idil Gouled Robleh sent-off.
“I am very proud of the girls who have played well in the two legs and made sure we qualify for the AFCON. I thank the players, technical team and the federation for all the support,” said Burundi’s coach Gustave Niyonkuru after the match.
It was all celebrations at the Stadium after the final whistle. The TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of nations (AFCON) will attract 12 teams.
