Burundi have stopped Kenya’s Emerging Stars to join Tanzania in the final of the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.

The Burundi team ejected coach Stanley Khayo Okumbi’s team in the second semi final match played at the Bahir dar Stadium, Ethiopia this afternoon.

After battling to a goalless draw in the 90 minutes, Burundi defeated Kenya 4-2 in penalty shootouts. Issa Hakizimana, Asman Ndikumana, Adolphe Hakizimana and Franck Nduwimana all converted for the Burundi team. Kenya’s Behard Ochieng Oginga and Frank Onyango Odhiambo also converted, while Vincent Wasambo and David Okoth Odhiambo missed.

“We are very happy to get to the final without suffering defeat. We need to keep focused and prepare well for the final game against the good team of Tanzania,” said Burundi’s coach Jimmy Ndayizeye.

Burundi will now face Tanzania in the final to be played on July 30th, while Kenya and South Sudan will face-off in a play-off match to decide who finishes third and fourth.
