Burundi have moved an inch closer to qualify for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022.

The Burundi team this afternoon humbled Djibouti 6-1 in the first leg of the final phase of the Women’s WAFCON qualifier.

The home side took a 4-1 half time lead at the Urukundo Stadium in Ngozi, before returning to add to more goals.

Rukiya Bizimana gave the home side the lead after 18 minutes at the Urukundo Stadium in Ngozi. Asha Djafari increased Burundi’s lead after 25 minutes, before Lerman Abdou pulled one back for the Djibouti team.

But the home side continued to push forward before Sandrine Niyonkuru and Aniella Uwimana added two more goals before the interval.

In the second half Niyonkuru and Bizimana were on target again as the Burundi team attacked in numbers.

“ I am happy the team played according to instruction and made sure we picked a big win in the first leg. We need to go back and prepare for the second leg,” Burundi’s new women’s coach Gustave Niyonkuru told cecafaonline.com.

After Kenya’s withdrawal, Uganda became the second team to qualify for the TotalEnergies Women’s WAFCON 2022 besides the hosts Morocco. The competition will attract 12 teams.
