Burundi fight back to defeat Djibouti
The Swallows of Burundi defeated Djibouti 2-1 in the first leg tie of the first round qualifier of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022.
Muderi Akbar gave Burundi the lead after 17 minutes at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
But the Djibouti team fought back to level matters through Temidayo Feargod after 35 minutes.
The two teams continued to create several scoring opportunities, but Burundi made sure they converted after 75 minutes. Cedric Dany Urasenga netted the winning goal for the Swallows.
“Djibouti is a much improved team and it was not easy facing them. We need to prepare well ahead of our second leg encounter against them on July 29th,” said Burundi coach Jimmy Ndayizeye
Th winner between Burundi and Djibouti will face Sudan in the second round, while the winner between Somalia and Tanzania will be up against Uganda Cranes. The Amavubi of Rwanda wait to face the winner between Ethiopia and South Sudan in the second round.
Algeria will host the CHAN 2022 tournament expected to take place January 8-31st, 2023.
