CECAFA representatives Burundi suffered a 4-2 defeat to Botswana on Monday night in a Group C match at the on-going TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022 in Rabat, Morocco.

The Burundi team created some early opportunities, but failed to take them before Keitumetse Dithebe gave Botswana the lead after 43 minutes.

After the interval with Just two minutes played Lesego Radiakanyo doubled Botswana’s lead.

But Burundi fought back before Sandrine Niyonkuru reduced the deficit after 52 minutes to make it 2-1. Poor defending cost the Burundi team as  Refilwe Tholakele found space to make it 3-1 for Botswana after 55 minutes. Tholakele netted a second goal of the day on the hour mark, but Niyonkuru also got her brace towards the end of the match.

“We did not play well today and made many mistakes. But we need to plan better ahead of the next match,” said Burundi’s coach Gustave Niyonkuru after the match at the Stade Moulay Hassan, Rabat.

The win means Botswana go top of Group C ahead of second placed South Africa who beat defending champions Nigeria 2-1 in an earlier match played at the same Stadium.
