Buja Queens, CBE register important wins in Group A

Buja Queens and Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) have registered important wins in Group A in the on-going CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers – CECAFA Zone 2023.

The Burundi Women’s Premier League champions shocked home side Kampala Queens 2-1 in the first match played at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

After losing their opening match 2-1 to the Ethiopian side in the opening match, Buja Queens came all out from the start charged and showing high level of determination to win the match.

Kenyan international Topister Situma put Buja Queens ahead with 21 minutes with a well timed header. The home side tried to push forward, but failed to break Buja Queens’ defending line.

Buja Queens came close again after 31 minutes, but Elizabeth Wambui’s effort from close range missed the target. Fazila Ikwaput also missed a chance to level matters for Kampala Queens when he shot was saved after 40 minutes.

After the interval Situma scored her second goal on 53 minutes, but Elizabeth Nakigozi pulled a goal back for Kampala Queens with a well taken free-kick after 83 minutes.

In the second Group A match CBE were a class apart when they humbled Djibouti’s FAD FC  8-0.

Senaf Wakuma Demise and Substitute Ariet Odong Ojho each netted a brace for the Ethiopians, while Argash Kalsa Tadesse, Loza Abera, Nardos Getnet Mekonnen and Birra Etsegenet Bizuneh also had a goal each on the score sheet.

CBE FC remain top of Group A with 6 points, while Buja Queens and Kampala Queens each have 3 points, and FAD FC are bottom of the log.

On Wednesday Group B matches will take place in Kampala as JKT Queens (Tanzania) face New Generation FC (Zanzibar), while AS Kigali Women (Rwanda) take on former champions Vihiga Queens (Kenya).
