Shemeles Bekele scores twice as Ethiopia defeats Guyana in US

The Walias of Ethiopia stopped Guyana 2-0 in their first international friendly match played in the US on Wednesday.

Skipper Shemeles Bekele Godo netted in each half to give Ethiopia the win in a match played at the Segra field, home of Loudoun United FC located few miles outside Washington DC.

Bekele gave Ethiopia after 11 minutes, and made it 2-0 midway the second half to give interim coach Daniel Gebremariam his first win since taking charge in May this year.

Gebremariam, also the technical director of the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) took over Wubetu Sabate who stepped down following poor results in the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Ethiopian national team will play their second match on August 2nd, 2023 against Atlanta Rovers in Atlanta.

Bahiru Tilahun, the Secretary of the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) says the tour to USA is helping to showcase the skills and talent of the national team and also to get close to the Ethiopian fans in the USA.
