A Fahad Bayo goal was all Uganda Cranes needed to defeat hosts Rwanda in a Group E match of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers played on Thursday evening at the Nyamirambo Stadium in Kigali.

The goal came in the 41st minute after a well taken Isaac Muleme free kick.

Steven Mukwala and Moses Waiswa also had more scoring opportunities for Uganda, but failed to find the target.

The hosts had Meddie Kagere and skipper Haruna Niyonzima with chances infront of goal, but shot off target.

“We are happy to win in Kigali. Now we go back to plan for the return leg on Sunday,” said Uganda’s head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.

The other Group E match saw Mali defeat Kenya 5-0 in a match played last night at the Grande Stade d’Agadir in Morocco.

Ibrahima Kone netted a hat-trick, while Adama Traore and Moussa Doumbia also got their names on the score sheet.

Mali now lead Group E with 7 points, while Uganda are second on 5 points and Kenya with two points are in third place, while Rwanda are bottom with one point.

In a Group J match played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium last evening, hosts Tanzania suffered a 1-0 defeat to Benin. The taifa Stars dominated play and missed several scoring chances. Steve Mounie’s 71st minute goal made the difference to ensure the West Africans took maximum points.

DR Congo also humbled Madagascar 3-0 in the other Group J match played.

Today one other team from the CECAFA region will be in action with Djibouti hosting Burkina Faso in a match to be played in Morocco. On Saturday Ethiopia will host South Africa at the Bahir Dar Stadium.
