APR, Young Africans, Simba SC register wins

Three teams from the CECAFA region APR FC, Young Africans SC and Simba SC kick started their 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaigns with wins in the first leg of the preliminary round on Saturday.

Rwanda Premier League champions APR FC made use of their home advantage to stop Tunisia’s US Monastir 1-0, while Young Africans SC humbled Zalan FC 4-0 in Dar es Salaam, and Simba SC picked a vital 2-0 away win to Nyasa Big Bullets FC in Malawi.

Yves Mugunga netted the lone goal for APR FC after 19 minutes in a match played at the Huye Stadium. The visitors dominated play especially in the second half, but the Rwanda champions stood firm and defended well.

At the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Fiston Mayele netted a hat-trick, while Salum Faisal netted the other to guide the Tanzania Premier League champions Young Africans SC to a big win. Zalan FC hosted the Tanzanian Champions since they have not stadium approved by CAF in South Sudan.

Simba SC who reached the quarter final stage of the TotalEnergies CAf Confederation Cup last season also netted through Moses Phiri and veteran John Bocco to pick an important away win against Nyasa Big Bullets in Malawi.

Zanzibar’s KMKM SC suffered a 2-0 defeat to Al Ahly Tripoli from Libya in a match played at the Amani Stadium. Moutaouali Mohsine converted a penalty in the fisrt half, and substitute Abdalla Imhamed made it 2-0 after 66 minutes. Uganda’s Vipers SC were still battling Olympic Real de Bangui (Central African Republic) in a match that kicked off last in Congo Brazzaville.

On Sunday Ethiopia’s St. George will hosts Al Hilal (Sudan), while Arta Solar 7 (Djibouti) take on Al Merriekh (Sudan). Burundi’s Flambeau Du Centre FC will also host Libya’s Al Ittihad in a match that will be played in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
