African School Champions Cup gave our players good exposure – Habtamu

The inaugural African School Champions Cup 2022 climaxed on Sunday with hosts DR Congo and Morocco winning the boys and girls trophies respectively.

Ethiopia, the CECAFA representatives were represented by Dela Secondary School (Girls), and Awaro Secondary School (Boys) in the event organized by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Simon Habtamu, one of the coaches of the Ethiopian Schools told Cecafaonline.com that playing against the other teams from around Africa was a good test. “This has been very good exposure for our young players who now know what it means to be competitive,” added Habtamu.

While the Ethiopian team finished fourth in the boy’s category, the girls won bronze. Habtamu explained that playing at the inaugural event was very good exposure for the young footballers. “Our players are very excited that they played in the tournament at the Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa,” said Habtamu.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President also thanked DR Congo for hosting the tournament and all the teams for taking part.

The African School Champions Cup featured U-16 school teams from Benin, Ethiopia, South Africa, Senegal, Morocco and the host DR Congo.
