2021 AFCON QUALIFIERS: South Sudan defeat Seychelles, Djibouti held

South Sudan’s Bright Star stopped visiting Seychelles Pirates 2-1 in the first leg match of the preliminary round of the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers. It was the visitors who took a 1-0 lead through Nigel Hoareau after 12 minutes at the Al- Merriekh Stadium in Khartoum, Sudan.

But head coach Cyprian Ashu kept on his feet to push his players to get the goals that mattered. Koang Thok and Joseph Kuch made sure South Sudan took the lead into the break.

The two teams created scoring chances in the second half, but failed to make them count. Although South Sudan won their fist game under Ashu, the coach said they still have to work hard ahead of the return leg on October 15th in Victoria.

In the other matches played another representative from the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) region Djibouti settled for a 1-1 draw against visiting Gambia. Sanneh Bubacarr netted an own goal before making sure his team picked a draw with a late equaliser.

In the other matches played in the preliminary round Sao Tome and Principe picked a 3-1 away win over Mauritius, while Liberia picked a 1-0 home win over Chad.

The return legs of the qualifiers will be played on October 15th. The group stage of the qualifiers will kick off next month.
