2020 CHAN QUALIFIER: Rwanda upbeat ahead of Ethiopia clash
Rwanda’s interim national coach Vincent Mashami has vowed to guide the team to qualification for the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). The Amavubi will play away to Ethiopia on Sunday in the first leg of the final phase of the qualifiers at the Makale Stadium.
Mashami is upbeat after his team picked a morale boosting 3-2 win away to DR Congo early this week in an International build-up in Kinshasa. “We are determined to get a good result away before the return leg in October,” added Mashami
The coach will look to some of the stars like Thierry Manzi, Ernest Sugira Ernest and Eric Nsabimana who all scored in the win away to DR Congo. While Ethiopia ejected Djibouti 5-3 on aggregate in the first round, Rwanda made it to the next round without kicking a ball because of their high rank in the CHAN competition together with Sudan.
In the other matches to be played over the weekend in the Cecafa region Tanzania’s Taifa Stars will host Sudan. Tanzania who eliminated Kenya 4-1 on penalties in the previous round will hope that inspirational veteran goalkeeper Juma Kaseja continues to enjoy god form.
Burundi who were ejected in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers will hope to get some pride back in-front of their home fans when they host Uganda Cranes.
The Burundi team ejected South Sudan 4-1 on aggregate, while Uganda Cranes under interim coach Abdallah Mubiru saw off Somalia 7-2 on aggregate in the first round.
Three teams from the Cecafa region will join 13 other teams from other region for the 2020 CHAN competition to take place in Cameroon. The CHAN competition is strictly for players who are ply their trade in their country’s own domestic leagues.
