Burundi suffer second defeat in WAFCON

The Swallows of Burundi have lost their second defeat at the on-going TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2022 on Thursday evening.

Burundi who were reduced to 10 players later in the second half lost 3-1 to South Africa in a Group C match played at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat.

The Banyana Banyana team pushed forward as the Burundi team defended in numbers. Thembi Kgatlana gave South Africa the lead after 20 minutes, but Aniella Awimana leveled matters with a beautiful goal 10 minutes later.

But Burundi failed to defend well again and gave Amogelang Motau space to make it 2-1 for Banyana Banyana after 32 minutes.

In the second half Burundi’s goalkeeper fouled in the box and the referee Shahenda Saad Ali El Maghrabi pointed to the spot after 53 minutes. Substitute Linda Motlhalo made no mistake form the spot.

The South African team continued to dominate play before Burundi’s substitute Annociate Nshimirimana was sent off for a bad foul after 73 minutes.

Gustave Niyonkuru, the Burundi coach said his team had tried to close the gaps, but still did not take their chances created infront of goal. “We need to fight to win the last Group match against Nigeria,” added Niyonkuru.

South Africa who also stopped Nigeria 2-1 in their opening match have now joined Senegal and Morocco at the quarter final stage.
