Taifa Stars of Tanzania have edged Somalia 1-0 in the first leg of the first round clash in the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 qualifier.

Abdul Sopu netted the lone goal after 46 minutes against a highly defensive Somalia side at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The Somalia team hosted the Tanzania team because their Stadium in Mogadishu is not cleared to host International matches. The return leg will be played on July 30th, with the winner over the two legs facing Uganda in the second round.

In another CHAN 2022 qualifier played on Friday at the same Stadium, the Bright Star of South Sudan held Ethiopia to a goalless draw.

Action returns on Sunday at the same Stadium with Burundi hosting Djibouti. The teams of Somalia, Djibouti, Burundi, South Sudan and Ethiopia are all using the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium as their home ground since CAF has not approved Stadiums in their countries.

Uganda, Rwanda and Sudan are the other teams from the CECAFA region that will join the qualifiers in the second round stage.

The CHAN qualifiers are played on zonal basis and for the first time the tournament to be played in Algeria will have 18 teams instead of the previous 16.
