Somalia stun Ethiopia in U-17 AFCON qualifier

The national U-17 of Somalia has stunned hosts Ethiopia on Day 1 of the TotalEnergies TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Addis Ababa.

Abdihafid Abdi netted the lone goal in the 12th minute to ensure Somalia picked maximum points in a Group A match played at the Abebe Bikila Stadium.

The Somalia team started the match with a lot of dominance before they netted the goal. Ethiopia’s Abebezer Kusa and substitute Biniyam Dorze missed good opportunities to score, but the Somalia goalkeeper Mohamed Abdikadir was up to the task.

Nur Mohamed Amin, the Somalia coach dedicated the win to all the people of Somalia. “This is a very sweet win and the team has worked hard to achieve it,” added a tearful Amin.

In the earlier match Uganda Cubs defeated Burundi 4-0 in the opening Group B match. Alex Yiga netted a brace, while Arafat Nkoola and  Richard Okello also scored.

Burundi’s coach Olivier Niyungeko says the Uganda team had out marched them physically and had better experience. “But my team tried and gained good exposure,” added the coach.

Hamuza Lutalo, the Uganda Cubs coach said although they won the opening match, they will continue working hard for the remaining matches in the tournament. “Our target is to qualify for the U-17 AFCON 2023,” added the coach.
