Kenya, Burundi register huge wins in WAFCON 2022 qualifiers

Kenya’s Harambee Starlets and Burundi have registered huge wins in their first leg ties in the first round of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Kenyan team humbled South Sudan 8-0 in a match played at the Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday, while Burundi picked a convincing 5-0 win away to Eritrea in Asmara.

Neddy Akoth netted five goals for the Harambee Starlets, while Jentrix Shikangwa scored two and Adam Mwanahalima also got her name on the score sheet, while the Bright Starlets had no reply.

“I am happy that my players expressed themselves well and scored eight goals. We need to keep working hard ahead of the second leg match on Saturday,” said Kenya’s coach Charles Okere.

In another clash between teams from the CECAFA zone, hosts Uganda defeated Ethiopia 2-0 in a match played at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende. Riticia Nabbosa gave Uganda Crested Cranes the lead after only two minutes before Fauzia Najjemba scored the second after 76 minutes.

Twiga Stars of Tanzania suffered a 2-1 defeat to Namibia at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Play-maker Zenatha Coleman netted a brace for Namibia, while Stumai Abdallah netted the goal for the home side.

In the late match played Sudan, making their first appearance in the qualifiers lost 14-0 away to Algeria.
