Sudan registers first win in U-20 AFCON qualifiers
Hosts Sudan have defeated Djibouti in a Group A match played on Tuesday at the on-going U-20 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifiers for the CECAFA Zone in Khartoum.
Sudan took the lead after 25 minutes with Zeher Toto Glis taking a hard shot from outside the box that Djibouti’s goalkeeper Aboubaker Abdi Dirieh failed to stop.
In the second half the Djibouti team tried to reorganize themselves, but failed to make any clear attacks at the Sudan goal.
Sudan started the competition with a goalless draw against South Sudan.
In an earlier Group A match Burundi who humbled Djibouti 5-0 in their opening match where held to a goalless draw by South Sudan.
Burundi now lead Group A with 4 points and a better goal difference that hosts Sudan who also have the same number of points. The last matches of Group A will take place on November 5th, 2022 with South Sudan facing Djibouti, while Burundi take on Sudan.
On Wednesday Tanzania will face Ethiopia in a Group B match at the Al Hilal Stadium. Tanzania lost their opening match 2-0 to Uganda Hippos.
The best two teams from each group will qualify for the semi final stage, while the best two teams will automatically qualify for the U-20 AFCON 2023 to take place in Egypt.
