CECAFA WOMEN’S CHALLENGE CUP: South Sudan too good for Zanzibar Queens

South Sudan picked their first win in the on-going Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup on Monday. Coach Simon James Yor’s team stopped Zanzibar Queens 5-0 in their second Group A match played at the Chamazi Stadium.

Amy Lasu Luaya Lasu was the star of the team scoring a goal in each half. She opened the scoring after 24 minutes with a well taken free kick before adding the second after 83 minutes.

Later an own goal by Zanzibar’s skipper Abdallah Mwajuma gave South Sudan a 2-0 lead before helf time.

South Sudan Skipper Esther Luiz Elis netted the third goal before Chieng Thomas Manyol Riek and Lasu added two more.

Zanzibar’s Yussuf Hashim Sabahi played well but failed to tame the South Sudan defenders. Simon James Yor, the South Sudan coach praised his players for the good display in their second international match ever. “This is a learning process for us,” added the coach.

It was Zanzibar’s second defeat after falling 5-0 to Burundi in the opening match. South Sudan also lost 9-0 to Tanzania in the opening match.

In the second game defending champions Tanzania were leading 1-0 at half time. The regional Cecafa Senior Women’s Challenge Cup is partly supported by FIFA.
