TotalEnergies AFCON 2021: Sudan to face giants Egypt, Super Eagles

The two representatives from the CECAFA region Sudan and Ethiopia have today been drawn in tough groups ahead of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2021.

Conducted by CAF’s Director of Competitions, Samson Adamu, and assisted by African legends including Samuel Eto and Didier Drogba among others, the draw took place at the Yaounde Conference Centre in Cameroon. Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the CAF President also graced the function.

The tournament which will bring together 24 teams will take place from January 9 to February 6, 2022.

Ethiopia have been placed in a tricky Group A alongside hosts Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde.

Sudan head coach Hubert Velud will lead his team to be based at the Japoma Stadium, Douala in the tough Group D that has giants Nigeria, Egypt and Guinea Bissau. “The group is very tough and we shall play against big teams. But we are also a big team,” said Sudan’s coach Velud after the draw.

The defending champions Algeria are placed in E alongside Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea and Ivory Coast.

The opening game of the tournament will see the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon facing Burkina Faso on January 9th, 2022.

Group B: Senegal, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Malawi

Group C: Morocco, Ghana, Comoros, Gabon

Group D: Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Guinea Bissau

Group E: Algeria, Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast

Group F: Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania, Gambia
